TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Debbarma has issued a strong statement, asserting that there is \u201cno point in being in government\u201d if it cannot help the people. Marking his party\u2019s foundation day, he criticized political leadership for failing to address the basic needs of the public and called it a \u201ccrime\u201d for leaders to enjoy luxury while people continue to suffer.<\/p>\n
His remarks come amid growing frustration within TIPRA Motha over the delay in implementing the promises made in the Tiprasa Accord, which led the party to join the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura in March 2024. Following the agreement, TIPRA Motha leaders Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma were inducted into the Manik Saha cabinet.<\/p>\n
Taking to social media, Pradyot warned that if the central government fails to fulfill its commitments, TIPRA Motha may reconsider its alliance with the ruling BJP. \u201cIf we are not given our rights, if the promises made to us remain unfulfilled, and if there is no security for our identity, language, culture, land, and future, we should be ready to stay out of power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Addressing members of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), where TIPRA Motha holds power, Pradyot reminded them that they owe their positions to the people\u2019s trust. He cautioned against personal ambitions overshadowing the party\u2019s core mission. \u201cMany today enjoy security, official vehicles, and privileges, but that is only because the people believed in us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Pradyot also reiterated TIPRA Motha\u2019s key demands, including land rights similar to Bodoland, education rights akin to Karbi Anglong, direct funding for TTAADC, and constitutional recognition for the Tiprasa people. Rejecting concerns that meeting these demands could create instability, he remarked, \u201cWe have not asked for anything unconstitutional. Still, some say that if Tiprasa is given something, others will be annoyed, and it will turn into another Manipur.\u201d<\/p>\n
