Imphal, March 9, 2025 \u2013 Tensions escalated in Manipur as violent clashes broke out between security forces and protesters at Gamgiphai in Kangpokpi district, following the state government\u2019s initiative to restore normalcy by facilitating the movement of public transport under security escort.<\/p>\n
As per the government\u2019s decision on March 7, 2025, Manipur State Transport (MST) buses and other essential goods vehicles, including four LPG gas trucks and three oil tankers, successfully plied the Imphal-Bishnupur-Churachandpur route without disturbances. However, the situation turned volatile when an MST bus attempted to pass through the Imphal-Kangpokpi-Senapati route, encountering heavy resistance from protesters.<\/p>\n
Violence Erupts at Gamgiphai<\/p>\n
A large mob gathered at Gamgiphai and began pelting stones at the MST bus, prompting security forces to use tear gas and minimal force to disperse the protesters. Roadblocks were set up along the highway, with protesters\u2014including women and children\u2014felling trees, placing boulders, and burning tyres to block the movement of buses and security personnel.<\/p>\n
During the confrontation, armed miscreants among the protesters reportedly opened fire at security forces, leading to retaliatory action. The violence resulted in:
\n\u2022 27 security personnel injured, including two critically wounded.
\n\u2022 16 protesters injured, with one protester succumbing to injuries.
\n\u2022 Two security vehicles torched by the protesters.<\/p>\n
Security forces, despite facing heavy stone-pelting, catapult attacks, and gunfire, exercised maximum restraint while trying to control the violent mob.<\/p>\n
Government Denies Escorting Protesters<\/p>\n
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) and Kuki Students\u2019 Organization (KSO) issued statements on March 8, alleging that security forces were escorting local protesters. However, the government has strongly refuted these claims, calling them baseless and false.<\/p>\n
The situation remains tense but under control, with additional security forces deployed in vulnerable areas.
