Imphal, March 23, 2025: Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Sunday addressed the growing controversy surrounding Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, who is under investigation after cash was allegedly recovered from his residence. Speaking to ANI in Imphal, Meghwal clarified that the matter is currently under the purview of the Supreme Court, which has constituted a high-level committee to probe the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis case is with the Supreme Court. It has formed a three-member committee including two High Court Chief Justices and one High Court Judge. Let the committee report come. Then we will talk about this…,\u201d Meghwal stated.<\/p>\n

The probe committee, formed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on March 22, comprises Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court Chief Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court Judge Justice Anu Sivaraman.<\/p>\n

The controversy erupted after sanitation workers claimed they discovered burnt pieces of \u20b9500 currency notes near the judge\u2019s official residence. \u201cWe found some small pieces of burnt \u20b9500 note while collecting garbage 4-5 days ago. We have found a few more since then,\u201d said Inderjeet, a sanitation worker.<\/p>\n

According to reports, a fire broke out on March 14 at an outhouse on the judge\u2019s property, where firefighters allegedly discovered unaccounted cash. Justice Varma was not present at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court also made public a preliminary report by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay, who stated that the matter warrants a deeper investigation. Justice Varma, in his formal response, denied all allegations and claimed he is being framed in a deliberate conspiracy. He emphasized that the storeroom where the fire broke out was separate from his main residence and denied that he or his family had stored any cash there.<\/p>\n

In line with the Supreme Court\u2019s directives, Justice Varma has been asked to preserve all data, messages, and communication on his phone.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Minister Meghwal was in Imphal to attend a National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) event where five Supreme Court judges were also present. During the program, the minister touched upon the Centre’s commitment to restoring peace in Manipur, which remains under President\u2019s Rule.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are going to fast-track peace restoration in Manipur. We also discussed the issue in Parliament. The Home Minister assured that the proposal regarding Manipur\u2019s future after President\u2019s Rule will be thoroughly debated in the House,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
