The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) resumed demolition work at Habitat Studio in Khar on Tuesday, citing violations of civic norms, a day after stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra\u2019s controversial video allegedly mocking Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde surfaced online.<\/p>\n

The civic action followed protests by Shiv Sena members, who accused the venue of operating illegally. In less than 24 hours after Kamra’s video went viral, Shiv Sainiks vandalized the studio on Sunday, triggering a swift response from the BMC.<\/p>\n

According to officials, the studio had constructed an unauthorized makeshift shed on the terrace and was illegally operating a studio in the basement \u2014 a space officially designated for storage. “The shed was temporary and hence removed without notice. The basement usage is under further scrutiny,” said Vinayak Vispute, Assistant Commissioner of H Ward.<\/p>\n

Sources confirmed that State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik contacted BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, urging action against the studio. Gagrani, in turn, instructed officials to inspect and address possible structural violations.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Habitat Studio announced a temporary shutdown following Sunday\u2019s attack. In a heartfelt Instagram statement, the venue said it was “shocked, worried and extremely broken” and emphasized that artists alone are responsible for their performances. “We are a platform, not the voice,” the post read.<\/p>\n

The studio also issued an apology for \u201call those hurt by the video,\u201d distancing itself from the content of Kamra\u2019s performance. This incident echoes previous controversies, including backlash over another show, ‘India’s Got Latent’, held at the same venue.<\/p>\n

With police forces and State Reserve Police now stationed outside the building, the situation remains tense as authorities continue their investigation. Stakeholders and art communities across the country are watching closely, concerned about the implications for creative freedom and venue accountability.<\/p>\n
