Imphal, March 27, 2025: Alongside the global observance, Manipur marked the 63rd World Theatre Day today with a state-level celebration held at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound, Imphal East. The event was organised by the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur.<\/p>\n
Special Commissioner (Art & Culture), Shri M. Joy Singh, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the transformative power of theatre in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, and addressing social issues. He underscored the importance of collective efforts from theatre artists, directors, writers, and enthusiasts to use theatre as a medium for social change and awareness.<\/p>\n
\u201cTheatre is not just an art form\u2014it is a mirror of society, a custodian of culture, and a catalyst for transformation,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
Director of Art & Culture, Shri K. Dinamani Singh, also addressed the gathering. He acknowledged Manipur\u2019s achievements in both sports and cultural spheres, assuring continued government support for artists. He highlighted the ‘Artiste Sing gi Tenbang’ welfare scheme and stressed the need to increase awareness and appreciation of theatre and mime, which currently receive less attention compared to the popular Shumang Leela.<\/p>\n
A special highlight of the event was a talk on the evolution of Mime in Manipur by Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Dr. Y. Sadananda, Director of Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory. The celebration concluded with a theatrical performance titled \u201cTamna Lai\u201d by artistes from Kalakshetra Manipur.<\/p>\n
