The chargesheet, submitted on April 9 at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court, has set the stage for a fierce showdown between the Congress and the BJP, reigniting debates on the misuse of investigative agencies and the future of political accountability in India.

The ED alleges that the Congress leadership misappropriated party funds to acquire Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald newspaper, through a privately held company, Young Indian. According to the chargesheet, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi each hold a 38% stake in Young Indian, with close associates accounting for the remaining 24%, raising serious questions about conflict of interest and alleged financial misconduct.

Congress has vehemently denied the charges, calling them “politically motivated” and a “desperate attempt” by the Narendra Modi-led government to divert attention from pressing national issues. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh branded the move a “state-sponsored crime masquerading as justice” and vowed to mobilize public opinion through mass protests. Protests erupted outside ED offices across several states, leading to the detention of numerous Congress workers.

The BJP, however, is standing firm on its stance. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed the Congress, alleging the Gandhis had converted a freedom-era institution into a “private ATM,” while stressing that the duo is currently out on bail and has failed to obtain relief from higher courts. “No one is above the law,” Prasad said, emphasizing that the law must take its course irrespective of political stature.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has stirred the pot further, with spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar calling the case “open and shut,” and questioning the delay in arrests. “If the charges are so clear, why is the ED holding back?” she asked, hinting at selective action.

In Andhra Pradesh, state Congress president Y.S. Sharmila launched a scathing attack on the BJP, coining the term “Bhrasht Jumla Party” to describe what she calls the ruling party’s corruption and empty promises. She accused the BJP of “weaponising” central agencies to throttle dissent, claiming that the Congress’ resurgence has rattled the saffron camp.

The controversy comes at a critical juncture for the Congress, which is making renewed efforts to rebuild its organizational strength. Rahul Gandhi has been actively engaging with grassroots workers, recently launching a campaign in Gujarat — a traditional BJP stronghold — as part of efforts to revive the party ahead of the 2027 assembly elections.

With the next court hearing slated for April 25, the National Herald case remains a flashpoint in India’s politically charged environment. The fallout from this legal battle is expected to play a significant role in shaping the narratives for the upcoming electoral cycles, as both sides dig in for a long and bitter confrontation.

New Delhi, April 16, 2025 — A political storm has engulfed the national capital following the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) filing of a chargesheet against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul … Read More

[32,35

post-2958","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-inn","category-national","entry
["GET
