Imphal, April 18, 2025 \u2014 The Manipur University Muslim Welfare Association (MUMWA) has issued a strong statement expressing deep concern over the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act 2025, calling it a serious infringement on the constitutionally guaranteed rights of minorities.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Thursday, MUMWA emphasized that the new law undermines the justice, dignity, and autonomy of the Muslim community, particularly in matters related to religious and community welfare. “The Act clearly violates the rights guaranteed to the minorities by the Indian Constitution,” the statement read.<\/p>\n
MUMWA stressed that Waqf is not merely a legal entity, but a centuries-old institution rooted in religious harmony, community welfare, and cultural continuity. The organization raised objections over what it termed “undue state interference” and “vague provisions” in the amended Act, which it says erode the autonomy of Waqf institutions.<\/p>\n
The association also voiced concerns over the potential indirect impact of the Act on educational institutions like Madrasas and universities that rely on Waqf assets for their operations.<\/p>\n
As a minority students\u2019 body within Manipur University, MUMWA urged the Supreme Court of India to take cognizance of the “deep negative implications” of the legislation and to uphold the constitutional rights of minority communities.<\/p>\n
