Rebels in Manipur Use Starlink to Bypass Internet Shutdowns
Imphal, January 5, 2025 – Reports have surfaced that militant groups in Manipur are utilizing Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, to bypass internet shutdowns imposed by the government. Despite the service being unlicensed in India, sources indicate it is operational in certain areas of Manipur, particularly near the Myanmar border.
The People’s Liberation Army of Manipur (PLA), a Meitei separatist group, has reportedly confirmed its use of Starlink devices to maintain internet connectivity during periods of blackouts. According to a senior PLA leader, the group initially accessed Starlink services in Myanmar before discovering its functionality within Indian territory.
The allegations have raised serious security concerns, as internet blackouts are often imposed to curb communication and coordination among militant groups in the region.
In response, Elon Musk clarified that Starlink satellite beams are turned off over India and claimed the service has never been operational in the country. Musk also stated that Starlink is currently seeking government approval to legally provide satellite broadband services in India, addressing security concerns as part of the application process.
