Who Fired at Tera Sapam? Police Say AT Member, Arambai Tenggol Says ‘Not Us’
Manipur Police have arrested a man allegedly linked to the Arambai Tenggol (AT) group in connection with a firing incident during a road clearance operation at Tera Sapam Leirak, Imphal West District. The incident occurred on June 9 when protestors reportedly attacked security forces attempting to clear road blockades.
According to the police statement, “While forces were engaged in clearing the road, one of the protestors opened fire at the troops and managed to escape from the spot. Later, Manipur Police apprehended the assailant, identified as Raj alias Boinao Pangeijam (39), a cadre of Arambai Tenggol, along with the weapon of offence—a pistol.”
The arrested individual was produced before the magistrate and has been remanded into police custody for eight days.
However, Arambai Tenggol has strongly denied any link to the incident. In a press release issued on June 9, Laishram Robason, Control Room Operator of Arambai Tenggol GHQ, stated: “The firing incident involving security forces at Tera Sapam Leirak has no connection with Arambai Tenggol. It is a deliberate attempt to misrepresent our democratic protest and malign the name of the organisation.”
The group claims that the attempt to associate the incident with AT is a “misconstruction” aimed at suppressing and misrepresentation of their ongoing democratic protest.
Further developments are awaited.
