Parliament Passes Landmark Waqf Reforms: PM Modi Hails New Era of Transparency and Social Justice
New Delhi: In a historic move aimed at overhauling the Waqf system in India, both Houses of Parliament have passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the development as a “watershed moment” for socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth.
Taking to Facebook, PM Modi expressed his gratitude to all Members of Parliament who actively engaged in discussions and contributed to strengthening the legislation. He also thanked citizens who submitted suggestions to the Parliamentary Committee, emphasizing the importance of democratic debate and dialogue.
“For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with lack of transparency and accountability,” Modi wrote. He noted that these flaws disproportionately affected Muslim women, the poor, and Pasmanda Muslims. The newly passed laws aim to modernize the framework, enhance transparency, and protect the rights of marginalized communities.
The Prime Minister asserted that this legislative reform will usher in a new era where the dignity of every citizen is prioritized. “This is how we build a stronger, more inclusive and more compassionate India,” he added.
The bills now await presidential assent before becoming law.
