COCOMI Delegation Meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi: Urges Immediate and Decisive Action to Resolve Manipur Crisis
New Delhi, May 27, 2025 — In a significant political development, a delegation from the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his office in Delhi today. The meeting, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, was attended by key members of COCOMI including Jeetendra Ningomba (Convenor), Y. Nabachandra (Co-Convenor), Kh. Athouba (Spokesperson), and three others.
The delegation submitted a formal representation on behalf of the people of Manipur, demanding urgent central intervention in the protracted ethnic conflict that has devastated the state for over a year. Speaking to the media after the meeting, COCOMI leaders conveyed that they had directly expressed the people’s deep grievances and resentment over the central government’s continued silence in the face of what they termed an “unabated armed aggression” by Kuki militant groups.
Key Demands Presented:
- 1. Time-Bound Political Solution:
- COCOMI called for a clearly defined and time-bound political resolution to the crisis, warning that the public’s patience has reached its limits.
- 2. Disarmament of Kuki Militants and Destruction of Bunkers:
- The committee accused Kuki militants of violating ceasefire ground rules while allegedly receiving support from central forces and agencies. COCOMI urged the government to launch operations to disarm these militants and dismantle the illegal bunkers they occupy.
- 3. Accountability and Transparency in Government Roles:
- The delegation demanded clarity on the roles of various government agencies and central security forces, which they claimed have failed to protect Meitei civilians and instead enabled the aggressors.
- 4. Action Against Kuki Narco-Terror Networks:
- COCOMI emphasized the need for immediate action to dismantle what it described as narco-terrorist networks among the Kuki groups, stating that these networks are the root of the ongoing violence.
- 5. Suspension of Operation (SoO) Review:
- They pressed for the urgent review and abrogation of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreements with Kuki militant groups, citing blatant violations.
COCOMI’s Position on the Home Minister’s Response:
Despite the urgency of their demands, the delegation conveyed dissatisfaction with the outcome of the meeting. According to COCOMI, the Home Minister did not provide any concrete assurance or timeline for action. They stated that the response appeared “generic” and lacked the seriousness needed to address a year-long humanitarian and territorial crisis.
Public Mobilization Threat if Centre Fails to Act:
COCOMI warned that if the Government of India fails to respond with immediate and serious action within a short time frame, the people of Manipur, particularly the Meitei community, would be compelled to take up a more decisive public movement. They indicated that the sentiment in the valley region is growing increasingly impatient and may escalate into a larger resistance if the government remains inactive.
The press release ends with a strong message: the central government must act now to protect Manipur’s integrity and prevent a complete breakdown of civil order in the region.
