Congress Wins Both Lok Sabha Seats in Manipur, CM Biren Singh Calls it an ‘Emotional Outburst’
The Indian National Congress has secured both Lok Sabha seats in Manipur during the 2024 general elections, defeating the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Naga People’s Front (NPF).
In the Inner Manipur constituency, Congress candidate Angomcha Bimol Akoijam emerged victorious with a margin of 109,801 votes. Meanwhile, Alfred Kanngam S. Arthur claimed the Outer Manipur seat with an 85,418-vote lead.
Chief Minister N. Biren Singh responded to the outcome, describing the Congress’s win as a “sudden emotional outburst” by voters. He raised concerns about the capability of the newly elected MPs to address critical issues facing the state, such as border fencing, the Free Movement Regime (FMR), and the identification of illegal immigrants. Singh also criticized the Congress for failing to outline clear solutions to these challenges despite its electoral success.
The Congress victory is seen as a significant backlash against the BJP-led government’s handling of the ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. The unrest, which has claimed over 200 lives and displaced thousands, has triggered widespread dissatisfaction with the ruling administration.
State Congress president K. Meghachandra has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Biren Singh, holding his government responsible for the ongoing crisis. He said the election results reflect the people’s discontent with the administration’s approach to the ethnic conflict.
Following their win, Congress leaders have pledged to prioritize the rehabilitation of displaced individuals and to restore peace in the troubled state. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, in his victory speech, called for unity and collective action to address Manipur’s challenges, emphasizing the need for inclusive governance.
These results highlight a shift in the political landscape of Manipur, as voters signal their demand for effective leadership to resolve ethnic tensions and bring stability to the state.
