District Magistrate Bans Gatherings in Lilong Amid Rising Tensions
Thoubal, April 7, 2025: In the wake of escalating tensions and a violent mob incident, the District Magistrate of Thoubal has issued prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, 2023, effectively placing restrictions across the entire Lilong Assembly Constituency.
According to an official order issued by District Magistrate A. Subhash Singh, the move comes following a report from the Superintendent of Police, Thoubal, detailing a violent incident on the evening of April 6. A mob of approximately 7,000 to 8,000 individuals, reportedly armed with lathis and stones, attacked the house of one Md. Asker Ali of Lilong Sambrukhong Mamei and set it ablaze.
The District Magistrate stated that the situation is highly sensitive and poses a significant risk to public peace and safety, with a high likelihood of further disturbances in the area. The prohibitory orders were issued under emergency provisions, without prior public notice, due to the urgent nature of the situation.
Effective immediately and until further notice, the following activities are prohibited:
1. Assembly of five or more persons.
2. Carrying of firearms, swords, sticks, stones, or any other lethal weapons and objects that could be used offensively.
These restrictions, however, do not apply to government agencies involved in maintaining law and order or essential services.
The order has been circulated to senior officials including the Chief Secretary and the Commissioner (Home) of the Government of Manipur, as well as the Superintendent of Police and Sub-Divisional Magistrates.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as they work to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
