Dr. Jugindra Sorokhaibam Becomes First Allopathic Doctor in Manipur to Receive Visharad Degree in Classical Music
Imphal, June 3: Dr. Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Director of Medical Services at Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. (SHRI), has achieved a rare distinction by becoming the first allopathic doctor from Manipur to be awarded the Visharad degree in vocal classical music.
The Visharad certification, conferred by Bhatkande Sangit Vidyapith, Lucknow, was awarded to Dr. Jugindra in February 2025. He underwent rigorous training under Dr. Bachaspatimayum Bidyapati Sharma, a faculty member of Manipur University and son of the renowned writer and composer B. Jayantakumar Sharma, who wrote the state anthem “Sana Leibak Manipur.”
Despite a demanding medical career, Dr. Jugindra completed the five-year music course through regular morning classes and cleared all examinations.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Dr. Jugindra is a respected figure in the medical community. He is a pioneer of laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery in Manipur and India and a founding director of SHRI. He served as the National President of the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI) from 2020 to 2022, led the Indian Medical Association (IMA) from 2022 to 2024, and currently holds leadership roles in both the ASI Manipur State Chapter and the AMASI Safe Laparoscopic Programme.
SHRI has acknowledged and celebrated Dr. Jugindra’s achievements, stating that his dedication serves as an inspiration for both the medical and artistic communities.
