Flood Advisory Issued for Imphal as Imphal River Crosses High Flood Level
Imphal, 31 May 2025: The Water Resources Department of the Government of Manipur has issued an official advisory warning of potential floods in the Imphal valley following heavy rainfall in Kangpokpi, the catchment area of the Imphal river.
According to the advisory (No. 1/28/2025-COMM[WR]), Kangpokpi received a total of 175 mm of rainfall over the past 72 hours—13 mm on 28 May, 39 mm on 29 May, and 123 mm on 30 May. This exceeds the historical flood-trigger threshold of 135 mm in 72 hours, which typically leads to flooding in the flood plains of the Imphal river.
The advisory states that from 6 AM on 30 May to 6 AM on 31 May alone, Kangpokpi recorded 123 mm of rainfall. The department cited a similar rainfall event in May 2024, when Kangpokpi received 131 mm in 24 hours during Cyclone Remal, resulting in floods and river breaches in Imphal valley.
As of 10:00 AM on 31 May, the Imphal river is flowing above the High Flood Level, with overflows and breaches already occurring at several locations.
The advisory further notes that surface runoff from Kangpokpi will reach the Imphal valley and is expected to cause additional overflows along the Imphal river.
The department has advised evacuation of residents living in the flood plains of the Imphal river within Imphal city.
