Gauhati Press Club Condemns Arrest of Journalist Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, Demands Immediate Release
Guwahati, March 26, 2025 — The Gauhati Press Club (GPC) has strongly condemned the arrest of senior journalist and GPC Assistant General Secretary, Dilwar Hussain Mazumdar, by Guwahati Police. The incident has sparked outrage among the media fraternity, with hundreds of journalists gathering at the Press Club on Wednesday to protest the growing intolerance of state authorities toward journalists performing their constitutional duties.
During the protest programme held at the GPC premises, the gathering demanded Mazumdar’s immediate release and called for an end to the continued harassment of journalists on duty. In a statement issued by GPC President Sushmita Goswami and General Secretary Sanjoy Ray, the club expressed deep concern over the increasing pressure on the press and resolved to continue its agitation until Mazumdar is released unconditionally.
The GPC also stated that the repeated targeting of journalists will be brought to the notice of the highest authorities in the country, as freedom of the press is fundamental to a healthy democracy.
