History Club, DM College of Arts Condemns Demolition of Manipur Rajbari, Calls for Heritage Protection
The History Club of Dhanamanjuri College of Arts, Dhanamanjuri University, has strongly condemned the recent demolition of the historic Redlands, also known as the Manipur Rajbari, in Shillong. The club described the demolition as a severe blow to the history and heritage of Manipur.
In a press release issued by its convenor, Bhanisana Irom, the club expressed deep concern over the decision of the Planning and Development Authority (PDA) and urged for a careful and research-based approach before taking up any renovation of historical sites.
“The demolition of the historic Redlands-Manipur Rajbari is a severe blow to the history of Manipur. There is a need to carefully scrutinize the PDA’s decision to rebuild the historical site for future generations,” the release stated.
The club pointed out that while the Manipur Government had claimed the project was meant for renovation, the fact that the structure was completely demolished, as also noted by the Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union, has caused public outrage and raised serious questions about heritage preservation.
The press release also highlighted the importance of history in shaping a society and called upon citizens to take responsibility for preserving the state’s historical sites and buildings. It urged people to pay attention to the concerns raised by historians and archaeologists and to make use of existing heritage protection laws such as the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958, and the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972.
The club further stressed the need for historical research before undertaking any renovation work to ensure a sustainable approach. “The Manipur Rajbari has been one of the many faces of the history of Manipur. We must unite and work together to protect our heritage,” the release added.
It also expressed support for the protest led by the Shillong Manipuri Students’ Union and encouraged more people to join in the movement to save and properly preserve the Manipur Rajbari.
“It is time to stand for Redlands. It is our responsibility to protect our heritage. If not us, then who?” the statement concluded.
