Manipur Professor to Lead Indian Team at 66th International Mathematical Olympiad
Professor Shanta Laishram, a distinguished mathematician from Manipur, has been appointed as the head of the Indian team for the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), set to take place in Queensland, Australia, in July 2025.
Currently a faculty member at the Indian Statistical Institute in Delhi, Professor Laishram has had an illustrious career in mathematics. Born in Thoubal district, Manipur, his journey began with humble beginnings. Encouraged by his father, who ran a cycle workshop, he developed a passion for mathematics early on. His academic trajectory took a significant turn when he participated in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) in 1996 and later attended the Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) program at IIT Madras in 1998.
Under Professor Laishram’s leadership, the Indian team aims to build on its recent success. In 2024, India achieved its best-ever performance at the IMO, ranking fourth globally and securing four gold medals, a silver medal, and an honorable mention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lauded the team’s achievement, describing it as a moment of great pride for the nation.
The IMO is the world’s premier competition for high school students, drawing mathematical talents from across the globe. Professor Laishram’s appointment underscores India’s commitment to fostering excellence in mathematics and inspiring the next generation of young mathematicians.
