MP Bimol Akoijam Requests Governor to Declare Flood Situation in Manipur a "State Calamity"
Imphal, June 1: Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), has written to the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, requesting that the current flood situation in the state be officially declared a “State Calamity.”
In his letter, the MP highlighted that several districts, including Imphal East, have been severely affected by flooding, which he noted has occurred earlier and with more intensity than in previous years. He cited factors such as deforestation and policy-related issues contributing to the recurring nature of floods in the state.
The MP referred to the India Meteorological Department’s orange alert, indicating continued heavy rainfall, and warned of the potential for a prolonged and worsening monsoon season. He stated that the declaration of a “State Calamity” would facilitate institutional measures, inter-departmental coordination, and the mobilization of financial assistance and relief schemes.
Following the submission of the letter, Dr. Akoijam also met with the Governor to discuss current and potential measures by the relevant authorities. He has been in contact with various officials, including District Commissioners and the Commandant of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Dr. Akoijam suggested that National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets in the state—particularly those trained by the SDRF—could be mobilized to assist citizen groups and volunteers engaged in relief efforts. He has also provided monetary support for food arrangements for citizen volunteers involved in assisting flood-affected individuals.
