NHRC Directs NHAI To Act Within 8 Weeks On Complaint Over Dangerous NH-137A Stretch
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take action within eight weeks on a complaint filed by Asem Roshan Singh regarding the unsafe condition of NH-137A and adjoining roads in Manipur.
The directive, issued by the NHRC’s Law Division on Thursday, follows the Commission’s examination of the complaint supported by geotagged photographs, CPGRAMS records and Speed Post proof. The NHRC has asked NHAI to initiate appropriate action, associate the complainant in the process and inform him of the steps taken.
The complaint cites violations of Article 21, pointing to deep potholes, eroded surfaces and broken stretches that pose serious risks to commuters, obstruct emergency services and disrupt essential supply movement along the route.
Asem Roshan Singh said he approached the NHRC after earlier representations to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways brought no response. “This is not just about roads. It is about human lives. NH-137A is a lifeline for thousands of citizens,” he said, welcoming the Commission’s intervention.
The NHRC’s order now places responsibility on NHAI to ensure immediate remedial measures and uphold road safety obligations.
