Singda Dam Structurally Safe, No Immediate Risk of Overtopping: Officials
Authorities have confirmed that the Singda Dam remains structurally sound and is operating well within its designed safety parameters, with no immediate threat of overtopping despite recent rainfall.
According to the Water Resources Department, the dam is equipped with a robust ogee spillway system designed to safely manage excess water. This ungated, 30-meter-wide spillway has been hydrologically designed to handle inflows associated with a 100-year return period, ensuring the dam can effectively cope with extreme weather events.
As of now, the reservoir’s water level stands at EL 905.80 meters, leaving a buffer of 3.70 meters before reaching the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 909.50 meters. Additionally, the dam maintains a freeboard of 2.32 meters and features a 1.00-meter diameter outlet pipe within its control shaft for regulated water release.
Officials assured that both inflow and outflow levels are being continuously monitored, and any potential surge will be managed through controlled gate operations. “There is no cause for concern at this stage. The situation is under constant observation and all necessary precautionary measures are in place,” said an official from the department.
Singda Dam is currently undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the World Bank and the Central Water Commission (CWC), further reinforcing its structural integrity and operational reliability.
