Stormy Parliament Session Expected as Manipur Budget and Waqf Bill to be Tabled Tomorrow
New Delhi, March 9, 2025 – The second phase of the Budget Session of Parliament is set to resume tomorrow, March 10, with the government prioritizing the presentation of Manipur’s budget and the Waqf Amendment Bill. The session is expected to be turbulent, as opposition parties are prepared to challenge the government on multiple fronts, particularly over the ongoing unrest in Manipur.
Following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, the state was placed under President’s Rule on February 13. With no elected government in place, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present Manipur’s budget in Parliament. Opposition leaders are likely to scrutinize the allocations and demand accountability for the central government’s handling of the law-and-order situation in the state.
Additionally, the government is set to introduce the Waqf Amendment Bill, which aims to reform the management and regulation of Waqf properties across the country. The bill has been stuck in the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) due to strong opposition and concerns over its impact on Waqf institutions. Despite this, the government remains determined to push for its early passage in this session.
With rising tensions over Manipur’s crisis and the proposed Waqf reforms, the upcoming Parliament session is expected to be highly contentious. Opposition parties have already signaled their intent to disrupt proceedings over the worsening situation in Manipur, making it likely that the debates will be heated.
All eyes will be on Parliament tomorrow as the government moves forward with these critical legislative measures.
