UMPC Condemns ‘Manipur is Only for Meitei’ Remark, Calls for Unity
The United Meitei-Pangal Committee (UMPC) Manipur has strongly condemned a recent statement declaring that “Manipur is only for Meitei,” made by a responsible individual and a civil society organization (CSO). Calling the remark “deeply harmful to the social fabric of our state,” UMPC stressed that such exclusionary views go against the “fundamental values of unity, coexistence, and shared heritage.”
In a statement issued on Friday, UMPC emphasized that “Manipur is home to multiple ethnic communities, each playing a crucial role in its history, culture, and progress.” The committee warned that “any attempt to claim exclusive ownership over the state disregards the principles of inclusivity and mutual respect that have sustained our society for generations.”
UMPC further urged leaders and organizations to act responsibly in fostering inter-community harmony. “True leadership lies in fostering unity, not division,” the committee asserted, calling on all sections of society to “reject divisive rhetoric and work towards strengthening inter-community harmony.” It stressed that “the future of Manipur depends on collective peace, understanding, and the recognition that every individual, regardless of their ethnicity, has an equal stake in the state’s well-being.”
The committee also urged authorities to intervene and prevent such divisive narratives from gaining traction. “We call upon authorities to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of such harmful narratives and reaffirm Manipur as a land of inclusivity, respect, and shared prosperity,” the statement concluded.
