Manipur Floods: Over 3,800 Affected, Widespread Damage Reported Following Heavy Rains
Heavy and continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has triggered widespread flooding and landslides across several parts of Manipur, leaving thousands affected and causing significant damage to property and infrastructure. As per the official Daily Situation Report issued by the Directorate of Relief and Disaster Management, a total of 3,802 people have been impacted by the disaster.
The report, dated May 31 and released at 6:00 PM, highlights the gravity of the situation. A total of 3,275 localities, communities, or villages have been affected by the deluge. While no human lives have been lost, two people sustained injuries, and 64 animal deaths have been recorded so far.
Key Highlights of the Report:
• Housing: 874 houses were damaged in the past 24 hours alone, raising the total number of damaged homes to 883.
• Evacuations and Relief: Authorities have evacuated 720 people from affected areas. Six relief camps have been opened to provide shelter, and relief material has been distributed to those in need. Two medical relief camps are operational.
• Agriculture and Infrastructure: 0.2 hectares of crop area have been reported damaged. Additionally, 11 cases of infrastructure damage and 12 landslide incidents have been confirmed.
• Government Response: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Armed Forces have been deployed to assist in rescue and relief operations. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Police, Fire Services, and rescue boats are also actively involved.
The state continues to receive heavy rainfall, exacerbating the risks of further landslides and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging the public to follow safety advisories.
The disaster response is being coordinated by the Directorate of Relief and Disaster Management, Government of Manipur, and efforts are ongoing to provide immediate support to the affected population.
