Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla Inaugurates MANITEX 2025, Showcases Manipur’s Handloom Heritage to Global Stage

The Governor of Manipur, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, inaugurated the Manipur International Textile Expo (MANITEX) 2025 at Urban Haat, Nilakuthi, Imphal, today. Organised under the theme “Weaving a Sustainable Future: Manipur’s Handloom Heritage to Global Fashion,” the event is being held by the Department of Textiles, Commerce & Industry and the Directorate of Handloom & Textiles, Government of Manipur.

The primary aim of MANITEX 2025 is to promote Manipur’s diverse handloom, handicraft, and textile products on the global stage, highlighting eco-friendly textiles, natural dyes, and sustainable weaving practices rooted in Manipuri traditions.

As part of the inaugural function, 3,000 frame looms and accessories were distributed to weavers under the National Handloom Development Programme, while financial assistance was extended to 60 ex-trainee artisans for purchasing tool kits. The Governor also released the Data Book of National and State Awardees of Manipur and unveiled the Handlooms & Textiles Calendar 2026.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Bhalla described MANITEX 2025 as “not merely an exhibition of fabrics and designs, but a proud celebration of Manipur’s identity, creativity, and craftsmanship.” He emphasised that each weave tells a story of the people and culture of Manipur, bridging tradition and innovation while empowering artisans — many of them women — with national and global exposure.

Highlighting the crucial role of the handloom and textile sector in the state’s economy, the Governor said women weavers form its foundation, preserving heritage while shaping a sustainable future. He further noted that initiatives such as One District One Product (ODOP), PM Mitra Parks, and Digital India e-commerce integration are helping strengthen the ‘Made in Manipur’ brand.

Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary (Textiles, Commerce & Industry and Transport), Padma Shri awardees, officials, weavers, and members of the public attended the inaugural event.
