Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) Issues Strong Condemnation After Meitei Seven Colored Flag Hoisted on Shirui Peak
Ukhrul, May 23, 2025: The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), the apex student body of the Tangkhul Naga community, has released a sharply worded press statement condemning the recent incident in which individuals allegedly affiliated with the Arambai Tengol— identifying itself as the Cobra Team – Unit 58—hoisted the Meitei seven-colored flag atop the sacred Shirui peak during the Shirui Lily Festival.
Calling the act a “grave provocation,” TKS stated that the flag hoisting, accompanied by communal slogans, was a deliberate political move aimed at disturbing the peace and neutral stance of the Naga people and asserting territorial dominance far beyond the Imphal Valley.
“This deliberate political symbolism, carried out in sacred Tangkhul territory, is nothing short of an attempt to disrupt peace and the neutral stand of the Nagas,” the statement reads.
TKS made clear that it views the act as a serious challenge to the dignity and cultural sovereignty of the Tangkhul people. “The Tangkhul Naga people have never and will never accept any imposed symbols, flags, or slogans that undermine our identity and rights,” the statement emphasized, asserting that the community continues to uphold the sky-blue Naga flag as a symbol of their historical and political aspirations.
TKS President Ramreichan Keishing and General Secretary PS Ningthingmaya, who signed the statement, also issued a firm warning: “TKS will not allow such actions to go unchallenged… Any repetition of this kind of intrusion and political posturing will face strong consequences. The dignity, history, and territorial integrity of the Tangkhul Naga people are non-negotiable.”
The organization also reminded the public that the Shirui Lily Festival has always been a space for goodwill and inclusivity. However, it cautioned that such hospitality must not be mistaken for weakness or passive consent.
TKS called upon all responsible citizens and organizations to “reflect seriously on this incident and ensure that such divisive acts are never repeated in the future,” stressing that such vigilance is crucial to preserving peace and the spirit of coexistence in the region.
