Manipur Artisan Elangbam Ongbi Memicha Devi Receives National Handicraft Award 2023

In a notable recognition for Manipur’s traditional craftsmanship, Smt Elangbam Ongbi Memicha Devi, a renowned artisan from the state, was conferred the National Handicraft Award 2023 by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, at a ceremonial function held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

The award was presented in honour of Memicha Devi’s outstanding contribution to handicrafts, particularly her expertise in creating intricate products using Kouna (water reed), a traditional and eco-friendly material native to Manipur. Her work reflects exceptional skill and the preservation of indigenous techniques.

The National Handicraft Award is among the country’s highest honours for artisans and is presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the promotion and development of Indian handicrafts.
