State Government, JAC Reach Understanding on Md. Shahnawas Killing

Manipur State Government has reached an agreement with the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Killing of Md. Shahnawas, following a crucial meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. The agreement, which comes after widespread outrage over the killing of the 33-year-old from Kairang Tera Makhong, was formalized with signatures from the Special Secretary to the Chief Minister, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Imphal East, and the JAC Convenor.

The Government pledged a swift and thorough investigation, with a commitment to file a chargesheet within three months. “We will ensure a comprehensive investigation into the case and expedite legal proceedings to deliver justice,” the resolution states.

The Government agreed to strengthen preventive measures to stop armed miscreants from causing further violence. “All necessary actions will be taken to prevent the movement of armed groups in all localities,” it affirmed.

Recognizing the growing risk of communal tension, the Government vowed to crack down on online hate speech. “Strict action will be taken against those spreading provocative messages on social media,” the agreement reads.

The Government announced plans to hold a dialogue between civil society organizations (CSOs) from both Meitei and Pangal communities. “A meeting will be convened to bring about communal harmony and understanding” it stated.

The victim’s family will receive necessary support, although specific details were not disclosed.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who met with the JAC and Pangal CSO representatives at his residential office, expressed his condolences. “The Government will extend necessary assistance to the family of the deceased and take stringent measures to prevent similar incidents in the future,” he said. “I offerI my sincere condolences for the tragic demise of Md. Shahnawas and pray for his soul to rest in peace.”
