Relief Committee Submits Memorandum to Supreme Court Judges Seeking Urgent Intervention for IDPs in Manipur

 

 

Imphal, March 22: The Relief Committee Manipur has submitted a memorandum to the Hon’ble Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority and Hon’ble Judges of the Supreme Court of India during their visit to the relief camps housing Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Manipur. The memorandum highlights the plight of thousands of people displaced due to ongoing turmoil and violence in the state, and calls for urgent legal and humanitarian intervention.

In their appeal, the committee urged the apex court to take swift action to curb the heinous acts of terrorism and violence committed by armed militants and miscreants, which have resulted in massive civilian displacement. The memorandum emphasizes the need for immediate protection and restoration of peace and communal harmony.

 

The charter of demands includes:

1. Immediate cessation of attacks on innocent civilians.

2. Resettlement of IDPs in their original homes.

3. Free movement across the state.

4. Equal remuneration for IDPs.

5. Free medical services and treatment for chronic diseases.

6. Free education and hostel fees up to university level.

7. Priority in government and private sector recruitment.

8. Equal facilities for IDPs living outside camps.

9. Regular counseling to prevent suicide due to trauma.

10. A dedicated grievance cell for IDPs.

11. Timely issuance of essential documents.

12. Enrolment in government insurance schemes like PMSBY.

 

The memorandum was signed by Relief Committee Coordinators Yumnam Somorendra Singh, Heisnam Bijenti Devi, and Chief Coordinator Thoidingjam Bon Khurai, who expressed hope that the Supreme Court’s visit would bring national attention to the suffering of IDPs and result in tangible action.

 

The committee concluded by urging the judiciary to consider the matter with utmost urgency and compassion.
