Kunal Kamra Faces Backlash Over ‘Gaddar’ Remark; Studio Vandalised and Shut Down
Comedian Kunal Kamra has told police he does not regret his ‘gaddar’ (traitor) remark, allegedly aimed at Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Kamra said he would only apologise if ordered by the court, denying any political influence or payment, and even offered to let police inspect his finances.
The controversy escalated after Shiv Sena workers loyal to Shinde vandalised Habitat Studio in Mumbai, where Kamra performed. The studio was later demolished by civic authorities citing violations. The studio owners have temporarily shut operations, stating they cannot ensure safety while supporting free expression.
CM Devendra Fadnavis condemned Kamra’s remark in the Assembly, calling it “low-level comedy”. Meanwhile, opposition leaders like Aaditya Thackeray and Priyanka Chaturvedi defended Kamra, accusing the government of intolerance, noting Kamra never directly named Shinde. Police cases have been filed both against Kamra and the vandals.
