MGHWU Seeks Probe Into Student Organization Group’s Role in Harassment of Girl Hostellers

The Muslim Girls’ Hostellers’ Welfare Union (MGHWU), Hafiz Hatta, Imphal, has strongly condemned the recent eviction notice issued by the Waqf Board, Manipur, against three bonafide hosteler Ms. Samina Sheikh, Ms. Tajida, and Ms. Roshni, directing them to vacate the hostel within two days on alleged grounds of employment.

In an official statement issued by Samina Sheikh, General Secretary of the Union clarified that all three are bonafide students who have already submitted valid documents to the hostel authorities. Their part-time work engagements are only for financial support and knowledge development, not full-time employment, and should not be treated as a violation of hostel rules. The MGHWU emphasized that students have the right to engage in part-time work to meet financial needs, provided they are not in full-time government service.

While expressing gratitude to the Hon’ble Chairman of the Waqf Board, Manipur, for assuring that all grievances of the hostel residents will be resolved by October 15, 2025, the Union alleged that some Waqf staff members continue to harass and mentally torture hostel residents, showing little regard for their wellbeing. The MGHWU accused the staff of issuing threats of eviction whenever students raise their concerns.

The Union also alleged interference by a student organization within the Meitei Pangal community, accusing it of pressuring the Waqf Board and hostel authorities, thereby creating unnecessary tension and mental harassment among the girls. The MGHWU has warned this organization to stop such activities immediately.

In a follow-up statement, the MGHWU urged the Waqf Board to:

  1.  Immediately withdraw the unfair eviction notice.
  2.  Take strict action against staff members involved in harassment or misconduct.
  3.  Investigate the role of the student organization accused of creating issues inside the hostel.
  4.  Fulfill the assurances given by the Waqf Board and resolve all issues before October 15, 2025.

The MGHWU reiterated that the hostellers stand united for justice, dignity, and a peaceful academic environment for all Muslim girl students under the care of the Waqf Board, Manipur.
