Not Here to Compromise: Conrad Sangma Rejects Separate Administration in Manipur

Imphal, October 10, 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K. Sangma on Friday firmly rejected any demand for a separate administration in Manipur, reiterating his party’s commitment to the state’s unity and territorial integrity.

Speaking at a press conference in Imphal during his visit to the state, Sangma said, “We are not here to compromise on Manipur’s territorial integrity. Discussions can always be held on how administrative structures can function within the state, but completely bifurcating Manipur is not our stand.”

Sangma is in Manipur to meet civil society organisations (CSOs) and community leaders as part of efforts to seek recommendations for peace in the state, which continues to face unrest and deep community divisions.

Urging all communities to engage in constructive dialogue, Sangma said, “If we keep sticking to positions and not focusing on issues, we will not get anywhere. Dialogue and understanding are key to moving forward.”

Responding to concerns raised by several Naga CSOs on the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing, the Chief Minister called for wider consultations before taking any decision. “While national security is important, cultural and historical factors must also be considered. There is always a way forward when dialogue is open,” he said.

Sangma highlighted that the NPP had earlier written to the Union Home Ministry calling for confidence-building measures in Manipur. “About a year and a half ago, we had written to the Ministry of Home Affairs that something must be done to restore confidence. The people had lost trust in the leadership,” he added.

The NPP had previously withdrawn support from the BJP-led Manipur government, citing public interest as its primary concern.

Addressing reports of differing opinions within his party, Sangma clarified that the NPP remains united despite internal debates. “Differences will always be there, but they must lead to dialogue, not division. The NPP remains disciplined and united,” he said.
