ITPI North East Zonal Conference Held in Imphal

The North East Zonal Conference of the Institute of Town Planners, India (ITPI), was held today at Hotel Classic Grande, Imphal, bringing together planners and experts to discuss sustainable and resilient urban development in the region.

This year’s conference focused on three themes — strengthening regulatory compliance, promoting non-motorized transport, and building urban resilience to climate extremes.

Shri R.K. Dinesh Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary (MAHUD), attended as Chief Guest. He highlighted challenges faced by Manipur, including recurring urban floods, rising air pollution and increasing pressure on urban services. He stressed the need for sustainable planning to make towns cleaner and more resilient.

ITPI President Tpr. Pradeep Kumar noted that this was the first ITPI event hosted in Manipur and said the chosen themes are crucial for the North East, especially amid climate-related risks such as landslides and flooding.

A book titled Hill Area Planning was released during the event.

Three technical sessions were held, featuring speakers from Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, SPA Delhi, CSE New Delhi and NIT Patna. The sessions covered regulatory reforms, walking and cycling infrastructure, and strategies for climate adaptation.

The valedictory function was addressed by Shri Thokchom Kirankumar, IAS, Secretary (LR & IT), while Tpr. Nepram Gitkumar Singh proposed the vote of thanks. The conference served as a platform to share ideas and shape a sustainable urban roadmap for the North East.
