Pherzawl District Observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The District Administration, in partnership with the District Social Welfare Office, marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall under the theme “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Society for Advancing Social Progress.”
Speaking at the programme, ADC & In-Charge DSWO Joel G. Haokip said the globally observed day is a reminder to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. He urged a shift from charity-based attitudes to inclusive practices that ensure equal access to government schemes and participation in decision-making. He also highlighted the need for better accessibility in public institutions.

Guest of Honour Dr. Hmanglamkhup Kom encouraged the community to recognise the talents of persons with disabilities and provide equal opportunities without discrimination.
Deputy Commissioner Mannuamching said society’s changing attitudes have helped reduce stigma and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusion, noting the three percent job reservation for persons with disabilities. She reminded District Level Officers of their responsibility to promote inclusiveness and added that the upcoming Mini Secretariat will include accessibility features such as ramps.
As part of the event, cash assistance and incentives were distributed to six persons with disabilities. ICDS officials, District Level Officers, staff, and families of PwDs attended the programme.
