Litan Sareikhong Relief Centre Condemns MLA Y. Khemchand’s Unannounced Visit, Calls Media Coverage Misleading
The Litan Sareikhong Relief Centre has released a strong clarification following an unannounced visit by Meitei MLA Y. Khemchand to the relief camp on Monday morning, raising concerns over what it described as an “opportunistic and misleading” portrayal of the incident by certain media outlets.
According to the statement issued by Lunkhojang Baite, in-charge of the Litan Sareikhong Relief Camp, the visit occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m., at a time when most inmates—primarily men—had left for work, leaving only children, women, and elderly residents inside the camp. The MLA, who was originally scheduled to visit Kamjong, arrived without prior notice and was accompanied by several BJP workers.
The camp alleged that the MLA used the absence of responsible inmates to make an “uninvited stop,” during which he took photographs with unsuspecting children before hastily departing.
The statement further expressed disappointment over how certain valley-based media outlets allegedly merged footage from two unrelated events—the MLA’s abrupt visit and a separate interview of an internally displaced person (IDP) by an independent journalist—to suggest an interaction between camp residents and the legislator. The relief centre called this portrayal “highly unethical” and urged media houses to uphold journalistic integrity during a sensitive period for Manipur.

The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul, KSO-Ukhrul, the Village Authority, and the Youth Club of Litan Sareikhong also distanced themselves from the episode, clarifying that they were neither informed of nor involved in the visit. The organisations reiterated that they do not welcome such “calculated and opportunistic actions” perceived as attempts to gain visibility amid the ongoing turmoil in the state.
The relief centre appealed to all leaders to act responsibly, transparently, and with genuine concern for displaced communities.
