VILLAGE CHIEF BEATEN TO DEATH IN CHURACHANDPUR; POLICE PROBE UNDERWAY
A village chief from T Khonomphai in Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur district was allegedly beaten to death by unidentified armed men on Monday evening, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Mangthang Haokip, chief of T Khonomphai village. Reports said the incident occurred around 4:30 pm when a group of armed persons attacked him near the village. Owing to the remote location, villagers carried the severely injured chief to Khopijang, where they arranged to transport him to Churachandpur District Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries upon reaching Khopijang.
A case has been registered at Henglep Police Station, and a detailed investigation is underway. The body was later handed over to the family and villagers for the last rites.
Condemning the incident, the Henglep Headquarter Area Chiefs’ Association (HACA) expressed deep concern and urged all armed groups to end violence against village chiefs and civilians. The association called for peace and mutual respect among communities to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
