Imphal, February 27: The ongoing initiative to restore peace and communal harmony in Manipur has seen a positive response, as hundreds of illegally held weapons have been voluntarily surrendered across the state. Responding to the Hon’ble Governor’s appeal, various groups—including youth volunteers, community leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and women’s organizations—have actively facilitated the surrender of looted and illegally possessed arms and ammunition.

According to official reports, a total of 307 weapons were surrendered today, with 246 weapons handed over at the 1st Manipur Rifle Campus and another 61 weapons surrendered in different locations across the hills and valley districts.

Authorities have emphasized that such voluntary acts will play a significant role in restoring law and order in Manipur. As the seven-day window for voluntary surrender concludes today, the government has urged all individuals still in possession of looted or illegal weapons to hand them over at the nearest police stations, outposts, or security force camps without fear of prosecution.

“This is a final opportunity for everyone to contribute to peace, safeguard the future of our youth, and ensure the security of our society,” the statement from the Police Control Room read. The government has reassured that no punitive action will be taken against individuals who voluntarily surrender weapons within the stipulated time. However, strict legal action will be taken against those found in possession of illegal arms after the deadline.

Community leaders, CSOs, and women’s organizations have been urged to continue their efforts in encouraging the surrender of weapons. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to a safer and more secure Manipur, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial in restoring lasting peace in the state.
