No Proposal for AIIMS in Manipur, Government Responds in Lok Sabha

New Delhi | March 21, 2025:
The Government of India has clarified that there is currently no proposal to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Manipur. The statement was made in response to an unstarred question raised by Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Dr. Akoijam sought information regarding any consideration to set up an AIIMS in Manipur or plans to upgrade the existing Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, into an AIIMS.

Replying to the query, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, stated that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the establishment of 22 AIIMS has been approved across various states and union territories, including one in Guwahati, Assam, which is already functional. However, no new AIIMS is proposed for Manipur in the current phase of the scheme.

He further added that all AIIMS are developed as greenfield projects and are established as Institutes of National Importance under the AIIMS Act. “There is no provision to upgrade an existing institution into an AIIMS under the Act,” the minister clarified.
