Liangmai Naga Council Declares ‘No Tax Payment’ Stance Against GPRN/NSCN-IM
Imphal, March 27, 2025 – The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur (LNC-M), has officially declared a ‘No Tax Payment’ stance against the GPRN/NSCN-IM, citing repeated violations of Liangmai customary land rights and governance. The decision comes as a response to the alleged subjugation and distrust imposed by the GPRN on the Liangmai people.
In a strongly worded resolution passed during the annual assembly of LNC-M, the council asserted that the Maremei village, a Liangmai ancestral land, had been subjected to unauthorized agreements and land deals orchestrated by external parties. According to the council, GPRN Secretariat Kilo Affairs had issued multiple orders—dated October 15, November 12, and March 14—attempting to erase the legitimacy of Maremei village’s status within Liangmai traditional boundaries.
The declaration further accused R.K. Remping of unlawfully colluding with Kuki leaders, including Chief Lengkhomang Chongloi of Kuki Taphou, to sign a “Compromise Deed” and “Memorandum of Agreement (MoA)” without the consent of the Maremei Village Authority. The council condemned these actions as blatant violations of Liangmai customary laws.
Tensions escalated in early 2025, with reports of 11 houses belonging to Maremei villagers being vandalized in Senapati District on January 10. Just two days later, cadres of NSCN-IM (Maram-Thangal Region) allegedly carried out a violent attack, including cases of sexual harassment against six women.
LNC-M President R. Machundoubou vowed to defend the land, identity, and dignity of the Liangmai people, stating that no arbitrary or biased orders from the GPRN/NSCN-IM would be accepted until justice was restored. The council has now imposed a total halt on any tax payments to the GPRN/NSCN-IM, effective immediately.
The situation remains tense, with calls for authorities to intervene and address the grievances of the Liangmai Naga community.
