AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam Arrested Over Controversial Remarks on J&K Terror Attacks

Guwahati, April 24, 2025 — Assam Police have arrested All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam for allegedly making provocative and misleading comments regarding past terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. His remarks, which have stirred political and public outrage, were linked to the Pulwama suicide bombing in 2019 and the recent killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam.

Aminul Islam, the MLA from Dhing constituency, had claimed that both incidents were “government conspiracies” — a statement that was widely shared in a viral video on social media. Following the circulation of the video, the Assam Police registered a suo motu case and took him into custody.

“On the basis of a misleading and instigating statement by Dhing MLA, Sh Aminul Islam, which went viral and had potential to create an adverse situation, Nagaon PS Case 347/25 was registered,” Assam Police stated on X (formerly Twitter). The charges include sections 152, 196, 197(1), 113(3), 352, and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the remarks and confirmed that treason charges are being pursued against the MLA. “Anyone defending Pakistan after the terror attacks will face strict legal action. Aminul Islam’s statements support the enemy and are deeply damaging to national unity,” he said.

The AIUDF has since distanced itself from Islam’s comments. Party chief Maulana Badruddin Ajmal issued a statement emphasizing that the party stands with the government during national crises. “It was not our party’s view. Terrorists have no religion. We condemn terrorism unequivocally and support the government’s stand against it,” Ajmal said.

Aminul Islam remains in police custody as investigations continue. His arrest has ignited a heated political debate, with ruling party leaders demanding stern punishment, while civil liberty advocates call for caution in dealing with freedom of expression.
