ASF Outbreak Confirmed in Manipur: Kakching and Churachandpur Declared New Epicentres
In a notice issued by the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Manipur, the state has officially confirmed an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in pigs across Kakching and Churachandpur districts, declaring them as new epicentres of the disease.
According to the notification, the outbreak was confirmed based on laboratory reports submitted by the Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, Manipur. ASF cases were detected at the following locations:
- Moirangthem Leikai, Khamlangba Pareng, Kakching (Owner: M. Barunkumar)
- Kakching Turel Wangma, Ward No. 5 (Owner: M. Ramananda)
- Kangvai Village, Churachandpur (Owner: Khaimuon)
The government has declared these areas as controlled zones under Sections 6 and 20 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Disease in Animals Act, 2009.
To contain the spread, the department has delineated:
An Infected Zone within 1 km radius of affected premises,
A Surveillance Zone covering a 10 km radius, and
A Free Zone beyond the surveillance area.
Movement of pigs or pig products from these controlled areas is strictly prohibited, and violations will attract imprisonment or fines under the Act. The order also warns against disposing of carcasses of infected pigs in rivers, canals, or other water bodies.
Deputy Commissioners, veterinary officers, and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to implement containment measures as per the National Action Plan to prevent further spread of ASF.
