Kuki Inpi Ukhrul Condemns “Unauthorized” Visit of MLA Y. Khemchand to Litan Sarei Relief Camps

The Kuki Inpi Ukhrul District (KIU), the apex body of Kuki tribes in Ukhrul district, has strongly condemned what it described as an “uninvited and unauthorized” visit by MLA Y. Khemchand to the Litan Sarei Relief Camps on December 8. In a press release, the KIU termed the visit a serious breach of protocol, propriety and humanitarian sensitivity.

According to the statement, the MLA’s sudden appearance, reportedly accompanied by a large security contingent, caused “deep distress”among Kuki Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who continue to live under trauma and uncertainty. The KIU said such an act was not only unacceptable but also “profoundly disrespectful” to a community still awaiting justice.

The organisation questioned the MLA’s silence during what it described as the community’s darkest period. “Where were you when the Kukis were persecuted, displaced, and subjected to crimes of unimaginable cruelty?” the KIU asked, adding that no gesture of goodwill could be proclaimed through political posturing or unannounced visits when justice remains undelivered.

The press release further alleged that the visit appeared to be a calculated political exercise aimed at creating an impression of normalcy and unrestricted access to Kuki relief camps. It accused the MLA of attempting to elevate his political standing by portraying himself as a “daring figure acting against prevailing tensions.”

The KIU clarified that while limited movement of Meitei individuals through Ukhrul has been allowed out of respect for Tangkhul communities committed to peace, such instances should not be misinterpreted as permission for political leaders to enter Kuki areas without protocol.

The organisation also criticised certain valley-based media houses for allegedly linking the MLA’s visit with an unrelated journalist–IDP interaction, describing it as “unethical misrepresentation”. The KIU urged media outlets to uphold journalistic integrity and avoid misleading portrayals.
