NEHHDC Launches Jewellery & Handicrafts Livelihood Incubator in Guwahati
The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC) has inaugurated the Jewellery and Handicrafts Livelihood Business Incubator (LBI) at its Bamunimaidan premises in Guwahati. The initiative, launched under the ASPIRE Scheme of the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MoMSME), aims to provide skill development, innovation support, and market opportunities to artisans and entrepreneurs in Northeast India.
The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) is mentoring the incubator, which will focus on multiple domains, including gemstone jewellery, handmade paper products, home décor, and toy making. Equipped with cutting-edge technology like 3D printers and gemstone-cutting machines, the incubator seeks to bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques, enhancing the region’s jewellery and handicrafts sector.
NEHHDC has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery (IIGJ), Jaipur, and the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD) to strengthen training and design innovation. Research is also underway to explore natural seeds and minerals from the Northeast for jewellery-making.
Speaking at the event, Brig. R.K. Singh (Retd.), Managing Director, NEHHDC, called the incubator a “significant milestone” in empowering local artisans and boosting sustainable livelihoods. Dr. Sriparna B. Baruah, Advisor, NEHHDC, emphasised that the initiative would integrate traditional artistry with contemporary market trends.
The Jewellery Display Centre was inaugurated by entrepreneur Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, while the Gemstone Section was opened by Dr. Lalit Sharma, Director, IIE. Several dignitaries, including former MP Queen Oja and representatives from NID, NABARD, and MSME, attended the event.
An exclusive jewellery exhibition showcased handcrafted pieces, including bamboo, clay, and traditional Assamese jewellery, highlighting the region’s artistic heritage and the incubator’s role in its global promotion.
