MPCC Spokesperson Bupenda Meitei Denies Involvement in SC Leaked Audio Case, Slams BJP for Rumour Campaign

Imphal, April 18, 2025 — Senior spokesperson of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, has strongly denied allegations linking him to the ongoing Supreme Court case concerning the alleged leaked audio involving former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

At a press conference held in Imphal, Bupenda dismissed the social media rumours as false, malicious, and politically motivated, asserting that he has no connection with the case and has not appeared in court on behalf of any party involved. “I have not signed any vakalatnama, nor have I acted as a legal counsel for either the petitioner or the respondent,” he stated.

Calling the smear campaign an attempt to damage the Congress Party’s reputation, Bupenda accused individuals affiliated with or supporting the BJP of orchestrating the rumours. “Such misinformation, especially in Manipur’s current volatile atmosphere, amounts to intimidation and poses real threats to life and property,” he warned.

He issued a 12-hour ultimatum to those responsible to remove all defamatory content or face legal consequences. Complaints have already been sent to the Governor of Manipur, the DGP, Additional DGP, and the Chief Secretary. Bupenda further announced that he will escalate the matter by writing to the President of India, Prime Minister, and Union Home Minister.

MPCC President K. Meghachandra and Vice President Hareshwar Goswami stood in support during the press briefing, condemning the “deliberate attempt” to malign the Congress and its spokesperson.

Earlier, Bupenda had taken to social media to clarify his position, calling the allegations “unfortunate” and urging the public not to spread false information. “I am not a counsel or advocate of the petitioner or any party or the respondent in the said case,” he posted.

He concluded with a firm statement that legal action will be taken against anyone involved in propagating the baseless allegations.
