Extensive Intelligence-Based Operations Lead to Multiple Arrests of Undergrounds in Manipur
Imphal, May 7, 2025:
Security forces and state police have intensified intelligence-based combing operations and cordon-and-search efforts across Manipur in an attempt to root out underground elements involved in widespread extortion activities. A series of arrests have been made in recent days, targeting operatives linked with various proscribed groups.
On May 5, 2025, one active underground cadre of the KCP (PWG), Elangbam Jogen Singh alias Sanathoi (43), a resident of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai in Kakching District, was apprehended by security forces from Wabagai Lamkhai Bazar area under Hiyanglam Police Station. Authorities recovered one mobile phone, two SIM cards, and an Aadhaar card from his possession. He is reportedly involved in multiple extortion cases in the region.
The crackdown continued on May 6, 2025, with the arrest of Laishram Basanta Singh alias Ratan alias Ithoi (53), an active member of the RPF/PLA. He was arrested by security forces at Yairipok Bazar under Yaripok Police Station in Thoubal District. One mobile phone and two SIM cards were seized during the operation.
On the same day, Manipur Police arrested another underground operative belonging to the proscribed outfit KCP (Apunba). The individual, identified as Khangembam Joyson Meitei alias Loyumba alias Tondonba (28) of Khongman Khagembam Leirak, Zone-V in Imphal East District, was taken into custody from his locality under Irilbung Police Station. Investigations revealed his involvement in extorting money from educational institutions across the Imphal area. Police seized a mobile phone and a two-wheeler from his possession.
Later on May 6, two more active underground operatives of the KYKL (SOREPA) group were arrested by security forces. The individuals were identified as:
- (i) Yumkhaibam Nanao Singh alias Parihan (27) of Andro Kharam Leikai, and
- (ii) Chingakham Norenkumar Singh alias Korounganba (28) of Andro Sanapat, both from Imphal East District.
They were apprehended from the hilltop of Andro Khuman Hill under Andro Police Station. Two mobile phones were recovered from the duo.
