Kuki-Zo Council Refutes Media Reports on NH-02, Welcomes Extension of SoO Agreement

The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has clarified that the Imphal–Dimapur National Highway (NH-02) has never been closed or blocked, countering media reports that suggested a “reopening” of the vital route.

In a statement issued today after a delegation-level meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in New Delhi, the council said, “The Imphal–Dimapur NH-02 has never been closed or blocked. The NH-02 has consistently remained open for commuters and for the transportation of essential goods. Therefore, the question of ‘reopening’ does not arise, contrary to certain media reports.”

KZC explained that its appeal was specifically related to the Kangpokpi district stretch of the highway. “Our appeal was confined to the stretch of NH-02 passing through the Kangpokpi district. It must not be misinterpreted as an endorsement of unrestricted or free movement across the buffer zones. The sanctity of the buffer zones between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo areas will continue to be strictly respected and maintained,” the clarification stated.

The council further underlined that ensuring highway security lies with the Government of India. “It is neither the duty of the local public in Kangpokpi nor of KZC to guarantee foolproof security for national highway users. The MHA has assured that adequate central forces will be deployed to provide necessary security along NH-02,” the statement emphasized.

Appealing to media outlets and the public, the council said, “We request the media and the general public not to be misled by inaccurate interpretations, and to refrain from spreading misinformation on this sensitive matter.”

On the broader political development, the Kuki-Zo Council welcomed the extension of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF). “KZC warmly welcomes and supports the decision of the MHA to extend the Suspension of Operations (SoO) with KNO and UPF. We remain hopeful that the Government of India will follow this up by resuming the political dialogue for a Separate Administration under the Constitution of India, which alone can bring lasting peace and prosperity to the Kuki-Zo people,” the statement concluded.

The press clarification was issued by Ginza Vualzong, Secretary of Information & Publicity, Kuki-Zo Council.
