RIMS Observes National Anti-Leprosy Day, Calls for Elimination of Leprosy

The Department of Dermatology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed National Anti-Leprosy Day today at the General OPD Complex, RIMS Hospital, under the theme “Ending Discrimination, Ensuring Dignity.” The programme formed part of a nationwide initiative aimed at raising awareness and strengthening efforts towards the elimination of leprosy.

Director, RIMS, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, attended the programme as Chief Guest, while Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, presided over the function. Other dignitaries present included Dr. Chitralekha Keisham, HOD (i/c), Department of Dermatology; Dr. Salam Bocha Singh, State Leprosy Officer, Manipur; and Prof. Th. Nandakishore Singh, Professor, Department of Dermatology, RIMS.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasized that leprosy is a completely curable disease and stressed the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment to prevent disability and transmission. He urged healthcare workers, students, and the general public to dispel myths and stigma associated with the disease and to ensure dignity, compassion, and equality for persons affected by leprosy. He also reaffirmed RIMS’ commitment to awareness generation, early case detection, outreach activities, and rehabilitation services.

The observance focused on promoting early detection and complete treatment, while addressing stigma and discrimination linked to leprosy. As part of the programme, leprosy-affected patients were felicitated in recognition of their resilience and to encourage social inclusion and rehabilitation.

The programme was attended by the Dean (Academics), Heads of Departments, Principals of the Dental and Nursing Colleges, faculty members, staff, and students, reflecting RIMS’ collective commitment to public health awareness and compassionate healthcare.
