Kharge Slams BJP over Waqf Act, Calls ED Action on Congress a “Political Conspiracy”
New Delhi, April 19: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday expressed satisfaction over the Supreme Court giving importance to the concerns raised by the Congress and other Opposition parties regarding the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Act. Addressing party officials, Kharge accused the BJP-led government of “spreading confusion and rumours” and vowed to expose what he called a “conspiracy” behind the law.
He emphasized that the Centre had to assure the Supreme Court that it would not implement certain provisions of the Act until the next hearing scheduled for May 5.
Kharge criticized the government’s focus on the “Waqf by User” clause, accusing it of deliberately creating disputes around Waqf properties. “We are confident we will win this battle too. The BJP has left no stone unturned in spreading confusion,” he stated.
He urged party workers to go among the people, raise awareness, and counter the BJP’s narrative.
Kharge also linked the ED’s recent actions—targeting top Congress leaders and moving to seize National Herald assets—to a larger political vendetta. “There is no doubt that all this is being done out of revenge,” he said. “Young Indian is a not-for-profit organisation. No one can take or transfer AJL’s shares or properties.”
Referring to past government actions, he said ED raids on Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel ahead of the 2023 AICC Plenary Session in Raipur were attempts to sabotage Congress’ internal processes. “Still, the session took place,” he said, praising the party’s resilience.
Despite financial blockades before the previous Lok Sabha elections, Kharge claimed public support doubled Congress’ strength in the Parliament. “Our fight did not weaken,” he declared.
