Former JD(U) MLA Mujahid Alam Resigns Over Waqf Amendment Act, Slams Party’s Stand

Patna, April 19 – Former JD(U) MLA Mujahid Alam announced his resignation from the Janata Dal (United) on Saturday, citing deep dissatisfaction with the party’s support for the controversial Waqf Amendment Act.

Alam, who was also the JD(U) candidate for the Kishanganj Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 elections, said he had repeatedly urged the party leadership to reconsider its stance on the bill but was ignored.

“We all were very disappointed with the JD(U)’s stand on the Waqf Amendment Act. This act is against Muslims and aimed at acquiring Waqf properties,” Alam said in a statement, adding that his conscience did not allow him to remain in the party any longer.

Reacting to the resignation, senior JD(U) leader Neeraj Kumar downplayed the development, saying, “The party gave a lot to Alam. Now he decides to leave the party. He is free to make that decision.”

This is the second high-profile resignation from the JD(U) in recent weeks over the same issue. Earlier, party leader Mohammad Kasim Ansari also stepped down from all party posts, strongly criticizing the Nitish Kumar-led government’s support for the amendment.

The Waqf Amendment Act has triggered significant backlash among Muslim leaders, who see it as an attempt to undermine community property rights. The JD(U)’s continued support for the legislation is now facing growing internal dissent, especially among its minority leaders.
