RIMS Observes World Mental Health Day, Stresses Need for Inclusive Mental Health Support

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, observed World Mental Health Day 2025 under the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.” The programme was jointly organized by the Department of Clinical Psychology and the Department of Psychiatry at the New OPD Block, RIMS.

The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, Imphal, in the presence of Prof. S. Subhaschandra Singh, Medical Superintendent (i/c), RIMS Hospital; Prof. L. Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics); Dr. S. Gojendra Singh, Head, Department of Psychiatry; and Dr. Sameeta Ng., HoD (i/c), Department of Clinical Psychology.

As part of the observance, stalls offering mental health screening and support services were set up to raise awareness and provide assistance to the public. Pamphlets on mental health were distributed throughout the day, and a total of 142 individuals underwent psychological assessments at the New OPD Block.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma underscored that mental health is a universal right and should be accessible to all. He highlighted that Manipur has been facing significant mental health challenges in recent years due to ongoing conflict and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. He further informed that RIMS operates the Tele-MANAS Helpline (14416) — a 24×7 confidential mental health service under the National Health Mission (NHM), Manipur, providing free psychological support to those in need.

Reaffirming RIMS’ commitment to community well-being, the Department of Psychiatry continues to deliver essential mental health care services and promote awareness on the importance of mental well-being. The programme was attended by Heads of Departments, faculty members, staff, and students of RIMS, Imphal.
